We took a month off this summer, but we managed to fit in one last Halo Night before school picked back up. With seven players, we rounded out the summer with a very consistent attendance, though the players themselves varied greatly. In fact, fartbubble joined us with his son for the first time in months this time. As with other recent Halo Nights, we found the smaller turnout to offer some gameplay that larger nights could not.
Once Mighty Nimrod 6 showed up, we played some Team Slayer matches that all turned out to be very one-sided thanks to the odd count and some mismatched teams. For example, on a round on Divided We Fall, the final score was 50 to 34, mostly thanks to Mighty Nimrod 6 dominating with a Wraith. His 22 kills doubled most of the other team's individual scores (Riley Craven led the other team with 13 kills).
A couple rounds of Rocket Race saw a very frustrated set of teams. As usual when playing with an odd number, sitnklikeonion played the odd man out, offering frustration and annoyance to all teams involved. Riley Craven's team with fartbubble's son proved a healthy combination, gaining them solid victories in both matches.
We also played a couple rounds of Grifball, once in the larger Sandbox-based arena and once in the Foundry-based Grifball '09 arena. The strategy varies greatly from one to the other, but the four-man team managed to win in both matches, though the Foundry match's 7-2 victory was far more decisive than the 5-4 match on Sandbox. In fact, all the Blue Team members managed to score during the 7-2 win.
We finished the night with a round of Capture the Flag on Foundry with still-uneven teams. One would expect this match to prove as uneven as some of other other team matches during the night, but it seemed to be a stalemate until 7 minutes into the 13 minute match when the first flag was captured. After that, scores alternated, keeping the match even until mushashi captured the red flag and earned a victory for the smaller team. We found out after that final match that mushashi would not be coming back to Halo Night for a while due to some classes, so it seemed a fitting way to end it.
