For the first time in many months, Halo Night was not held at stinklikeonion's house. Instead, Riley Craven's hospitality and excellent setup featuring two projectors in two rooms gave us one of the best Halo Nights to date, despite a relatively low turnout of only six players. As we've learned lately with similar turnouts, small team battles supplement what some might call diminished action with greatly increased strategy, which makes for a fun night all around.
Our first match of the night was Rockets on Assembly. Riley Craven earned a cheap double kill on Zamurai 278 and SPARTEN 4000 thanks its deceptively open areas. The image to the left shows the exact moment before the "double kill" was earned. Riley Craven's rocket has clearly eliminated SPARTEN 4000, but Zamurai 278's own rocket is going to hit the ceiling above him, which also served as protection from Riley Craven's rocket. Should have been a Zamurai 278 suicide. Nope, Double kill.
Since we had an even set, Rocket Race seemed a natural choice. And the incredible driving of John486 and strategic rocketry of Zamurai 278 led them to a decisive win of 10 to 5 to 2 in three and a half minutes. But no, no. They're not content with destroying the competition on four wheels in record time. They even took time to have Zamurai 278 distract SPARTEN 4000 just long enough for John486 to throw in an assassination. Now they're just showing off.
The most exciting round of the night was Halo Night's second foray into a two-man-team Slayer on Orbital. The narrow, long halls and frequent debris for cover results in automatic forward and back positions when working with teams of two, demanding strategy from all teams. The match ended with a win from Riley Craven and stinklikeonion, but the scores were 50, 47, and 44. No player had less than 20 kills, so the participation was intensive.
Another two-man team slayer was played on Heavens Above, with slightly modified teams. The match was followed by complaints of stacked teams thanks to the team of John486, whose skill is quickly becoming legend at Halo Night, and stinklikeonion, who doesn't tend to be a factor in any match unless vehicles are involved. Unfortunately for the other two teams, Heavens Above offers exactly what those players need: vehicles and sniper rifles. With stinklikeonion earning 32 kills and a Running Riot from just a Hornet, it's not surprising who won that match.
